Managing Chronic Illness through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy helps to support individuals in improving self-management skills, reduce stress, anxiety and depression that often accompany life with a chronic illness.

CBT strategies and skill development can assist an individual in reshaping negative patterns of thought and behaviours with lasting change. CBT support of a chronic illness also acknowledges the grief that follows the diagnosis of an illness as recognizing “loss of self” and the significant life changes that come with it. With CBT individuals can better manage the physical and emotional challenges of a chronic illness while maintaining a healthy sense of self and bring pleasure and meaning back into their life.

What are CBT sessions like?

We will identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviour in our session.

CBT is usually a short-term treatment where we have set several sessions. This may vary depending on why CBT was recommended as a counselling offering.

During a session, we may discuss what is happening in your life or how your past experiences have affected you.
